Revolutionary Eco-Friendly PPE for Homecare — Or Is It?

We promised, on our Green Rural Care Commitment page, that we source plastic-free, biodegradable PPE wherever we safely can. We think a promise like that deserves proper scrutiny — including scrutiny of our own claim. So here's what we actually found when we looked into it.

The Problem We're Trying to Solve

Every single care visit involves single-use PPE. Gloves for personal care, medication administration, wound care, and stoma changes. Aprons for anything involving bodily fluids. Across an organisation the size of ours, that adds up to a genuinely significant volume of plastic waste every single week — none of it optional, all of it necessary for infection control, and almost all of it, historically, destined for landfill for a very long time.

Standard nitrile gloves are made from nitrile butadiene rubber — a fossil-fuel-derived plastic — and take well over a century to break down in landfill. Multiply that by every glove used on every visit, every day, across every care provider in the country, and it becomes obvious why this matters.

So when "biodegradable" PPE started appearing on the market, we were genuinely interested. We were also, having looked at a lot of supplier marketing over the years, a little sceptical. It turns out that scepticism was warranted, and the reason why is more interesting than the marketing on most of these product pages lets on.

The Claim That Fell Apart

Here's something most PPE suppliers won't tell us/you upfront…

For years, biodegradable glove manufacturers pointed to a specific industry test — ASTM D5526-18 — as evidence that their products broke down faster than standard gloves in landfill conditions. It was the standard, the number on the spec sheet, the thing procurement teams were told to look for.

In July 2025, that standard was formally withdrawn. Not tightened. Not updated. Withdrawn entirely, with no replacement, because the testing body concluded there was "no correlation between this test and actual landfill biodegradability." In plain English: gloves could pass the test and still behave, in a real landfill, essentially the same as an ordinary plastic glove.

There's a phrase used by people who actually study this properly that we think is worth repeating here: a biodegradable glove breaking down into thousands of invisible pieces "may not choke a turtle, but it will still choke an earthworm." Breaking into smaller pieces is not the same as disappearing, and disappearing is not the same as being harmless once it has.

We're telling you this not to be cynical about the whole category, but because we think a care provider that publishes a sustainability commitment owes you the same honesty about the limitations of that commitment as it does about its promises.

What Genuinely Does Work

None of this means the category is worthless — it means it needs to be chosen carefully, and the marketing needs to be read with a critical eye rather than taken at face value.

Additive-accelerated nitrile gloves — the more credible products in this space use specific additives designed to accelerate biodegradation once the glove reaches landfill conditions, and independent laboratory testing (using the anaerobic biodegradation standard ASTM D5511, which remains under review but has a more defensible real-world basis) has shown decomposition rates of up to 80–90% of glove mass within roughly 490 days, compared to a fraction of a percent for standard gloves over the same period. That is a genuinely meaningful difference — not "gone," but breaking down at a rate that is orders of magnitude faster than the status quo.

The full lifecycle matters more than the disposal method. The most credible voices in this space now argue that a glove's environmental footprint isn't only about what happens to it in a bin — it's about the entire production and supply chain behind it. A "biodegradable" claim on the packaging is not the whole picture, and we've learned to ask suppliers harder questions than we once did: what's the manufacturing footprint, what's the actual independent test data, and what happens to the product if it doesn't end up in the specific landfill conditions the test was designed around.

Recycling programmes for standard PPE remain a genuinely solid option where they're available — schemes exist that process used nitrile and vinyl gloves into raw plastic pellets for other products, avoiding landfill entirely rather than simply speeding up decomposition within it. For non-clinical waste specifically, this is often the more genuinely "green" route than a biodegradable glove that still ends up in a bin.

What We Actually Do

Given all of the above, here's the honest version of our own commitment, revised from the more confident language on our Green Rural Care Commitment page:

We source additive-accelerated, independently tested biodegradable PPE where the clinical task allows it, and we ask suppliers for actual laboratory test data rather than a marketing claim on the box. If a supplier can't show us the underlying test, we treat the "eco" label with the same scepticism we'd want you to have.

We never compromise infection control standards to make an environmental point. For any task where barrier protection genuinely needs to be absolute — active infection control, certain wound care, complex care involving bodily fluids — we use the PPE that is clinically appropriate, full stop. Sustainability is a genuine priority. It is never the first priority above your safety or our carers' safety.

We're honest that "biodegradable" is not the same as "disappears." We're not going to tell you a switched glove means zero environmental impact, because that isn't true and the withdrawn ASTM standard is a useful reminder of exactly why overclaiming in this space has been a real problem industry-wide.

We look at the full picture, not just the glove. Reducing unnecessary PPE use through good task planning (not opening a new pair of gloves for a task that doesn't need them), proper disposal segregation, and supporting recycling schemes for clinical waste where genuinely available all matter alongside the choice of product itself.

Why We're Telling You This

We could have written a much shorter, much more confident version of this post, the kind most companies write, where "biodegradable PPE" gets mentioned in one glowing paragraph and nobody asks any further questions.

We didn't, because the same instinct that made us write an honest page about robots in care, rather than either dismissing the technology or oversell it, applies here. A care company's environmental claims deserve exactly the same scrutiny as its clinical claims. If we wouldn't accept a supplier's unverified word on a medication's efficacy, we shouldn't accept it on a glove's biodegradability either.

The genuine progress in this space is real, and we're using it where it's genuinely proven. But "revolutionary" is doing a lot of work in a lot of PPE marketing right now, and we'd rather tell you honestly where the revolution actually is — and where it's still mostly on the label.
