Personal Care
North Shropshire Homecare

A lot of the anxiety families carry about a relative living alone, or being cared for by an exhausted family carer, isn't really about the daytime. It's about the night. The dark hours when a fall, a wander, or a sudden change in condition might happen with nobody awake to notice.

Our overnight care service exists to ease exactly that worry, by having a trained carer present in the home through the night, every night if needed, from 10pm to 7am.

We want to be completely upfront about what this service is, and what it isn't, before you read any further.

Please Read This First: We Provide Sleeping Nights Only

We provide sleeping night care. We do not currently have capacity to provide waking night care.

This distinction matters, and we'd rather you understood it clearly now than discover it doesn't fit your situation after committing to anything.

A sleeping night means a trained carer is present in the home throughout the night, sleeping on-site, and available to respond if they're needed, whether that's a call for help, a fall, or any other concern that arises. It's the right service for someone whose care needs through the night are occasional or unpredictable rather than constant, where the genuine value is in having someone there if something happens, not someone awake and actively providing care throughout.

A waking night means a trained carer is awake and alert the entire night, providing continuous, active care, for example someone who needs repositioning every hour, or constant monitoring of a serious medical condition, or support with frequent, ongoing personal care needs throughout the night itself.

We don't currently have the staffing capacity to offer waking nights. It's a genuinely different service with genuinely different staffing demands, and we'd rather tell you honestly that we can't provide it than take on a commitment we couldn't deliver safely and consistently.

If your relative needs a carer actively awake and providing care throughout the night, we are not the right service for that specific need, and we will tell you so directly during the assessment rather than afterward. We're glad to help you think about where to find that kind of support instead.

Who Sleeping Night Care Suits

This service tends to be the right fit for:

Someone living alone who is at risk of a fall or a medical event overnight, where the primary need is a reassuring presence and a quick response if something happens, rather than continuous active care.

A family carer who needs to sleep properly, after months or years of broken nights spent listening for a call, a noise, a sign that something's wrong. We've written before about why carer burnout is a genuine clinical risk in its own right, and overnight respite is often the single most restorative thing a family carer can receive.

Someone recovering from a hospital stay or surgery, where the early weeks at home carry a higher overnight risk than usual, but not one requiring hour-by-hour active care.

Someone with early to moderate dementia who may become confused or unsettled overnight, where a familiar, calm presence is often enough to resettle them, without needing continuous hands-on care throughout.

A short-term arrangement around a specific event, a family holiday, a period of illness in the usual family carer, or any situation where overnight cover is needed temporarily rather than indefinitely.

What Happens During a Sleeping Night

Our carer arrives at 10pm, settles the household for the night in line with the care plan, medication given if needed, personal care completed, the home checked and secured, and then sleeps in a designated space in the home until either morning or until they're needed.

If something happens during the night, a call for help, a fall, confusion, distress, they respond immediately. In a genuine emergency, they will call 999 and stay with your relative until help arrives, exactly as we would during any daytime visit.

At 7am, the carer completes the morning routine as needed, documents the night in the care record, and the visit ends, handing over cleanly to whatever daytime care follows.

What We Need to Know Before We Start

Because sleeping night care depends on the overnight need being genuinely occasional rather than continuous, our assessment for this service looks closely and honestly at the actual pattern of need through the night. We'll ask directly about how often support has been needed overnight recently, what that support has involved, and how settled or unsettled nights tend to be.

This isn't us trying to talk you out of the service. It's us making sure that what we're providing is genuinely right and genuinely safe for your relative's specific situation, rather than agreeing to something we later discover doesn't fit.

If Waking Night Care Is What You Need

If your relative's needs genuinely require a carer actively awake through the night, please tell us plainly during your first call. We will say so honestly rather than attempt a service we can't deliver to the standard we'd want, and we're glad to help you think through what else might be available, whether that's a different type of provider, a residential option, or a combination of approaches that better fits a genuinely continuous overnight need.
