For most of us, a trip to the shops is unremarkable. A routine errand, completed without much thought, woven into the ordinary fabric of the week.
For many of the people we support, it is considerably more than that.
Shopping is independence made visible. It is choosing your own food, your own brands, your own small luxuries. It is getting out of the house and moving through a familiar town. It is the chance encounter with a neighbour, the brief exchange at the till, the coffee afterwards if the legs hold up. When shopping becomes difficult — through reduced mobility, loss of a driving licence, recovery from illness, or the cumulative effect of age — something larger is lost alongside the practical capability. The world gets a little smaller. The sense of control over one's own daily life quietly diminishes.
Our shopping support is designed with that in mind. We are not here to collect a list and bring back the correct items. We are here to keep our clients connected to the routines and choices that make daily life feel like their own.
Two Ways We Support with Shopping
Shopping support looks different for different people, and we offer both approaches — sometimes separately, sometimes combined within the same care package.
Accompanying You
For clients who want to go out but find it difficult to manage alone, we accompany them on shopping trips — to the supermarket, to the market in Wem on a Thursday, along Whitchurch high street, or to any of the local shops, pharmacies, and businesses that are part of their regular routine.
We walk alongside, carry bags where needed, provide a steadying arm on uneven ground, help with reading labels or comparing prices, and allow the person to move at their own pace without feeling rushed or anxious. We wait patiently. We offer suggestions when asked and stay quiet when not. The outing belongs to the client — we are there to make it possible, not to take it over.
For many clients, a weekly accompanied shopping trip is one of the highlights of the week. It is time outside the house, in a familiar community, doing something purposeful. The social and psychological value of this is real and significant, and we take it seriously.
Shopping on Your Behalf
For clients who are unable to go out — through illness, recovery, severe weather, or a condition that makes outings impractical — we shop on their behalf, using a list they have provided or one we have built together over time based on their known preferences and routine.
We do not make assumptions about what someone wants. The brands matter. The preferences matter. The small things that make a person's kitchen feel like their kitchen — the particular tea, the specific biscuit, the bread from the bakery rather than the supermarket shelf — matter. We learn these things and we remember them.
Receipts are provided after every shopping trip, and any change is returned promptly and accounted for clearly. Trust is the foundation of this arrangement and we treat it accordingly.
Online Shopping Support
For clients who would prefer to order groceries online but find supermarket websites difficult to navigate — complicated interfaces, small text, confusing substitution policies, and the general challenge of doing something unfamiliar on a screen — we can sit alongside and help with the process.
This is a small but practical form of support that preserves choice and independence without requiring a physical trip out. It is particularly useful for clients in the more rural parts of our operating area — Prees, Whixall, Tilstock, Ash, and the surrounding villages — where the nearest large supermarket requires a car journey that is no longer straightforward.
Beyond Groceries
Shopping support is not limited to food. Daily needs include:
Pharmacy collections — picking up repeat prescriptions, collecting medication when a delivery hasn't arrived, and ensuring a client's medication supply never runs unexpectedly low is something we offer to service users with no local family or friends.
Post office and banking errands — taking a service user who wants to post letters and parcels, collect pensions or cash where a client manages their finances in cash, or accompanying someone to the bank in Whitchurch or Wem.
If something is a genuine daily need and it is safe and appropriate for us to help with it, we will find a way to do so.
A Note on Money and Trust
Shopping support inevitably involves handling a client's money, and we want to be completely transparent about how we manage this.
Carers who shop on a client's behalf carry cash provided by the client for that purpose, return all change and receipts without exception, and document expenditure clearly. We do not use client funds for anything other than the agreed purpose. Any discrepancy, however small, is reported and investigated.
If a client or family member ever has a concern about how money has been handled, we ask that they contact the office immediately. Financial trust is non-negotiable and we protect it accordingly.
Staying Connected to the Local Community
North Shropshire has a strong network of independent shops, markets, and local businesses that many of our clients have been using for decades. We actively support clients to continue using these — not defaulting to the nearest large supermarket as a matter of convenience, but respecting the relationships and routines that are part of someone's local life.
The market in Wem. The independent butcher. The pharmacy on Green End. The charity shops on Whitchurch high street that a client has browsed every week for thirty years. These are not trivial details. They are the connective tissue between a person and their community, and losing them — because nobody has the time to make the trips possible — is a genuine loss.
Where we can make those trips possible, we do.

We provide shopping support across our full operating area including Whitchurch, Wem, Higher Heath, Prees, Whixall, Tilstock, Ash, and the surrounding villages. For clients in more rural locations, accompanied outings may require a little more planning around travel time, but we factor this into the care package from the start.
