What "Dignity in Care" Award Actually Means (And Why We Think We Earned It)

Winning Partners in Care’s Dignity in Care Organisational Award is the kind of result that's easy to announce and much harder to properly explain. "Dignity" is a word every care provider in the country uses somewhere on their website. But it is worth looking closely at what the word actually requires in practice for a panel of judges to award it to one specific organisation over every other entrant.

So, rather than simply celebrating the win, we wanted to use this post to unpack what dignity means as a judged, evidenced category, and reflect on the specific everyday practices that earned it for our team.

Dignity Is Not a Feeling. It's a Set of Decisions.

The uncomfortable truth about dignity in care is that it's very easy to claim and very easy to get wrong without ever meaning to. It isn't primarily about a warm tone of voice or good intentions, though both matter. It's about a long list of small, specific, repeated decisions that either protect someone's sense of self or quietly erode it.

We've written about this at length before, particularly regarding the language we choose to use and avoid across our organisation. Client, not patient. Declined, not refused. Living with, not suffering from. These aren't just cosmetic choices. They are the daily evidence of whether an organisation actually sees the person in front of them, or simply sees a set of tasks to be completed.

When a judging panel evaluates an entry for this category, they aren't asking if you know how to say the word "dignity." They are looking for proof of whether dignity shows up in the unglamorous, unwitnessed moments. We believe it does, here, consistently.

What This Award Actually Tells Us

This award doesn't mean we've finished learning or that our work is done. Dignity in care isn't a static state you arrive at and maintain automatically. It's a discipline, practised daily, that can slip if an organisation stops paying attention.

What this award tells us is that the specific, sometimes unglamorous choices we've made publicly, and written about honestly on this blog for years, are recognisable as dignity in practice—not just dignity in language. We think that's worth being properly proud of.
