The Wem Carnival is more than just a local event; it is a cornerstone of our town's heritage, dating all the way back to 1911. Originally launched to mark the coronation of King George V, it has evolved into one of Shropshire's most cherished annual traditions.
This year, the festivities return on the first Saturday of September, transforming our streets into a vibrant tapestry of creativity. For many of our neighbors in Wem, the carnival is a lifelong milestone—a day of joy that connects the spirit of the past with the energy of the present.

Wem is a town with a rich and sometimes dramatic history that stretches back centuries. Beyond being the home of the famous Wem Carnival, which dates back to 1911, the town has several unique claims to fame.
The Great Fire of Wem
One of the most defining moments in the town's history occurred in 1677. A massive fire, allegedly started by a girl named Jane Churm with a candle, destroyed most of the town's timber buildings. This led to the town being rebuilt primarily with red brick, which gives Wem its distinctive architectural character today.
The Home of the Sweet Pea
Wem is internationally recognised as the home of the Sweet Pea. In the late 19th century, local nurseryman Henry Eckford developed many of the modern varieties of sweet peas we know today.
Eckford moved to Wem in 1888.
He transformed the flower from a relatively simple garden plant into a highly fragrant and colourful staple of British gardens.
The town still celebrates this heritage with an annual Sweet Pea Show.

The Wem Carnival Heritage: The carnival was originally founded to celebrate the coronation of King George V. It has grown into a major Shropshire event featuring both an afternoon parade and an illuminated evening procession.
A "Tenacious" Town: During the English Civil War, Wem was the first town in Shropshire to declare for Parliament. It famously withstood a siege by Royalist forces in 1643, leading to the local rhyme: "The women of Wem and a few musketeers / Beat the Lord Capel and all his cavaliers."
Brewery Traditions: For many years, the town was synonymous with Wem Ales. The brewery was a major employer and its heritage is still remembered, with the "Brewery Field" being a site of historical importance for town gatherings like the early carnivals.
Location and Geography: Wem is situated in the North Shropshire plain, near other historic rural communities such as Whixall, Prees, and Tilstock. Its proximity to the Whixall Moss—a rare peat bog—adds to the unique natural history of the area.
