Why You'll See North Shropshire Homecare on the Front of Prees United FC's Shirts this Season
Why We Sponsor Our Local Football Club
North Shropshire Homecare exists because of this community. Every carer we employ lives here. Every client we support lives here. The money this company earns stays here, paying local wages that get spent in local shops, rather than disappearing into a shareholder's return somewhere else.
Sponsoring Prees United FC is a small, practical extension of that same belief. A grassroots football club is one of the purest expressions of community there is, people giving up evenings and weekends, often unpaid, to keep something going that brings people together on a Saturday afternoon. That's worth supporting for its own sake, and we're genuinely glad to have our name on the shirts of a team that represents exactly the kind of village life we work alongside every day.
But there's a second reason, one that connects more directly to what we actually do.
The Thing Nobody Tells You About Independence in Later Life
We spend a great deal of time on this website talking about frailty, falls prevention, and the specific ways that reduced mobility shapes daily life. What we don't say often enough is this: the single most protective thing a person can do for their long-term independence is stay physically active, starting decades before anyone thinks it matters.
This isn't really about elite fitness. It's about something much more ordinary and much more powerful.
Muscle strength, balance, and cardiovascular fitness built up across a lifetime of regular activity, playing football on a Sunday, walking the dog, cycling to work, gardening properly rather than just tidying, form what's sometimes called physiological reserve. It's the buffer that determines what happens when illness or injury strikes later in life. Two people can have the same fall at the same age, and the person with more reserve gets up, dusts themselves off, and carries on. The person with less reserve doesn't recover the same way, and that single fall can be the moment everything changes.
We've written in detail elsewhere about frailty — the specific, measurable syndrome where physiological reserve has eroded to the point where the body struggles to bounce back from ordinary stresses. What matters here is the other end of that story: frailty isn't something that arrives suddenly at 80. It's the accumulated result, or the accumulated absence, of decades of exactly the kind of movement that happens on a football pitch on a Saturday morning.
It's Not Just the Body
The mental health case for regular exercise and team sport is, if anything, even stronger than the physical one, and it matters just as much to the work we do.
Depression and anxiety compound almost every condition we support people through — dementia, chronic pain, Parkinson's, recovery from stroke, loneliness in later life. Regular physical activity is one of the most consistently evidence-backed protective factors against low mood at every stage of life, and team sport specifically adds something that solo exercise doesn't: genuine social connection, a sense of belonging to something, and the kind of easy, unforced camaraderie that's much harder to build in a gym than it is in a changing room.
[Keeping the Conversation Going: Men’s Health and Independence]
Running around a pitch in Prees on a Saturday morning is, whether they know it or not, building two things simultaneously. A physical reserve that will serve them decades from now, and the social habits and mental resilience that make a genuinely good life more likely at every stage between now and then.
What We Hope People Notice
So if you see the badge on a Prees United FC shirt this season, that's us! Not because it sells more care packages, but because we think a club full of people staying active, connected, and part of something together is doing exactly the kind of quiet, long-term good for this community that we'd want to be associated with.
Come along to a match if you're local. We'll be there too.
